68th OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--1995 Regular Session

                            Enrolled

                        Senate Memorial 2

Sponsored by Senator DWYER

Whereas Archie Weinstein, a political legend in Lane County and
one-time gubernatorial candidate, died May 27 at the age of 94;
and
Whereas Archie Weinstein was born in New York City to Russian
Jewish immigrant parents and moved with his family to Oregon as a
boy, living first in Portland, then in a succession of small
eastern and central Oregon towns before finally settling in
Springfield; and
Whereas Archie Weinstein proceeded to build a fortune and local
political renown as a downtown Eugene merchant who railed against
the city's urban renewal project, which eventually forced him
from his beloved first store, and 'city hall, newspapers,
government bigwigs and anyone else who tries to kick Weinstein
and the other little guys around'; and
Whereas the crusty, self-made millionaire, at age 75
successfully ran for a position on the Lane County Board of
Commissioners, where his animated performances and outspoken
opinions delighted supporters, outraged foes, amused bystanders
and laid the groundwork for a feisty but futile run for Governor
in 1982; and
Whereas Archie Weinstein fought his political wars in the
manner characteristic of other Oregon mavericks, a manner
disdainful of faceless bureaucracy, diplomatic niceties and
needless government meddling; and
Whereas, as one of his most ardent critics has conceded, for
all his faults, Archie Weinstein's basic political instincts were
respectable; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Oregon:

That we, the members of the Senate of the Sixty-eighth
Legislative Assembly, mourn the passing of Archie Weinstein,
self-described 'champion of the little guy' and one of the
state's most colorful public figures; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this memorial be presented to his sons
Jack and Ted as an expression of our condolences and of the
esteem and affection with which we hold the memory of their
father.
