2009 Biography of Representative Bill Kennemer
Representative Kennemer was recently elected to serve in the Oregon Legislature as a State Representative for District 39. District 39 covers the Southwestern part of Clackamas County, Oregon City, and Canby areas. These urban hubs are surrounded by rural landscapes including Beaver Creek, Carus, Mulino, and Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Falls. Bill served Oregon previously as a State Senator from 1987-1996. He is presently serving on the Health Care and Business and Labor committees.
Representative Kennemer served as a Clackamas County Commissioner from 1997 to 2008. During this time he served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Oregon Counties (AOC), and served on several boards, councils, and committees of AOC. Growing up on a family farm, his farm house burned down in an accidental fire in 1952. The community came together and built his family a new home. He feels a strong calling to “pay it forward” through community and public service in appreciation for all the community has done for him.
Bill believes strongly in the importance of education. He graduated magna cum laude in 1968 from Warner Pacific College with a B.A. in Psychology. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology in 1975. This education served him well in his private practice as a Clinical Psychologist for 25 years and in his investments and small business.
Family life is busy for Bill and wife of ten years Cherie McGinnis (both having lost previous spouses to cancer). They share four children, one grandson, and five granddaughters, four of which attend Oregon City schools. For 35 years Bill has been involved in the community, sports, and local church activities in Clackamas County. In his time off Bill enjoys fishing, camping, archery, gardening, woodworking, and searching for treasures, especially old Oregon memorabilia, at garage sales. Bill and Cherie live the Canby School District in rural Oregon City.
