Statement from House Speaker Tina Kotek on obstruction of the largest public school budget in Oregon history:
“Today the Legislature had an opportunity to begin reversing over a half decade of cuts to Oregon public schools. This was an opportunity to rebuild our schools to stop teacher layoffs and reduced school days. I’m disappointed that some in the Senate were willing to say ‘no’ to students and parents who want to know whether their teacher will come back next year.
I hope the Senate will regroup, put gamesmanship and grandstanding aside, and come together to pass this needed stability funding for our schools. I look forward to passing this budget soon in the House. Oregonians are counting on us.”
Note to editors: SB 5519 invests $6.55 billion in direct allocation to Oregon public schools. Coupled with Oregon Public Retirement System savings enacted in SB 822, the total new investment in public schools is $6.75 billion: $1 billion over the previous biennium, and the largest public school investment in Oregon history.
