Reporting back to Senate District 20

The first month of the 2013 Legislative Session is done. We hit the ground running this February, and the pace hasn’t slowed down since. While there are a lot of controversial issues moving through the Capitol, I can still report a few successes.

I helped pass SB1 which would give veterans the day off on Veterans Day in Oregon. The bill moved through my committee on Veterans and Emergency Preparedness, and came to the Senate chamber where I spoke about the bill and earned a 29-0 vote. The bill is not a mandate on business, and simply asks that employers give a veteran the day off if requested by the employee.

I also spoke on SB 461 which declares Interstate 84 as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway. The bill passed the Senate with unanimous support and has moved to the House of Representatives.

I am currently working on many energy and environmental issues in my Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, and have already worked to find compromises on several bills that went on to receive bipartisan support.

I will be reporting back to District 20 every month with an update on what’s been happening down in Salem. Please always feel free to visit me at my office in the Capitol anytime.
