State Representative Sheri Schouten: Oregon House District 27
I am proud to represent Oregon House District 27, which includes Beaverton and SW Portland.
The 2019 Legislative Session just wrapped up, and it was one for the history books. This incredible session saw the legislature deliver on its commitment to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our state, with an eye to ensuring that Oregon is a place where everyone has an opportunity to succeed.
From record investments in public education, to health care affordability and access, to affordable housing, I was proud to be part of efforts to move Oregon forward for everyone. Among my own priorities were funding for the Beaverton HOOP YMCA Child Development Center, and approving a state-wide, industry funded safe disposal program for prescription and over the counter drugs.
Beaverton HOOP YMCA Child Development Center
This session, the Legislature invested $5.1 million in low-cost childcare by supporting the Beaverton YMCA HOOP Child Development Center project. The Beaverton Hoop YMCA currently serves over 9,000 youth through their various programs that operate inside the facility. The new Child Development Center, serving infants, toddlers and preschoolers will be housed in a repurposed building next door to provide a critical service to our community. Business leaders consistently cite a lack of affordable child care as a key challenge in recruiting and retaining talented employees and by addressing this issue we can both support working families and our local economy.
HB 3273 Drug Take Back Bill
After two years of negotiations, the Drug Take Back Bill, which will ensure that every community in Oregon has access to safe drug disposal sites, passed the Oregon Legislature. We know that unused prescription drugs present significant public health, public safety, and ecological concerns. Medication, if not properly disposed of, can lead to abuse, accidental poisoning, or contamination of our waterways. By investing in safe, convenient disposal of drugs, we can remove expired and unwanted drugs from circulation and reduce instances of poisonings and abuse.
It is an honor to serve as your State Representative. I hope to hear your thoughts and feedback.
