It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the State Senator for District 17 (NW Portland and Beaverton). It’s my goal to be of service to you -- my constituents -- and the great state of Oregon. I am committed to making Oregon the healthiest state in the nation, through thoughtful lawmaking, ensuring access to affordable healthcare, enhancing our education system, balancing budgets with financial sustainability in mind, protecting our most vulnerable citizens through robust social service programs, and ensuring a quality of life for every Oregonian through living wages and affordable housing.

In 2011, I decided to run for office because I wanted to make Oregon the healthiest state in the nation. In my tenure as your State Senator, I’ve achieved many accomplishments in working towards that goal. These include establishing Oregon’s CCO system, which streamlines and integrates health systems to deliver healthcare more efficiently, increasing Oregon’s vaccination rates, and most recently, raising the legal age for purchasing tobacco to 21.

When I’m not serving in the Legislature, I practice Family Medicine at OHSU. My 25 years of experience as a doctor have given me an understanding of how large systems and agencies work together in our state government. I’ve learned through my time in elected office that in order to make Oregon the healthiest state, we need Oregonians to be well educated, have affordable housing, enough food, and a sustainable economy.  With this larger understanding from my experience as a health care provider and a vision of what the system could be, I work to bridge the gap where health care, human services, education, and public safety meet.

As Co-Chair of the Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Services, I study, approve and balance the budgets of the Oregon Health Authority and Department of Human Services, which provide the majority of the state’s safety net services. I work to ensure these services are cost-effective, giving Oregonians the best value for their tax dollars. On the Senate Health Care committee, I am working to create transparency in drug pricing, and recently passed a bill to incentivize the use of primary care as a preventive health care model. On the Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Public Safety, I extended the period in which certain inmates would be eligible to re-enter public life through a focus on community rehabilitation. On the Joint Ways and Means Committee, I approved other aspects of  the state’s budget, including our most recent K-12 education budget, and our state’s transportation package.

Originally from Massachusetts, I call Oregon the home that I was meant for. I live with my husband in unincorporated Multnomah County, and have three adult daughters--one recently moved off to college, another just graduated, and my oldest lives in NE Portland with her partner. In the legislative interim, I spend one day a week practicing medicine and teaching  at an OHSU family medicine  clinic.

As always, I value your input, questions, and concerns, and am committed to making Senate District 17, and Oregon, an enjoyable place for all to live, work, raise families and treasure.  Please feel free to contact me about any issue that is of importance to you.
