Rich Vial and his family have lived in the Scholls area of Washington County for more than three decades. Here, they built a law firm, operated a family farm, and became involved in their local community.
Rich founded the law firm of Vial Fotheringham, LLP in 1986 with his wife, Paula, and friend Rob Fotheringham. Over the last 30 years, the firm grew significantly and they now employ over 100 people in six states. As part of his legal work, Rich helped write the first laws relating to condominium and homeowner associations, and his firm continues to represent tens of thousands of homeowners and individuals across the State of Oregon.
Having always had a desire to give back to his community, Rich has continually served on numerous boards and commissions. He is currently the Chair of the Washington County Planning Commission, a member of the Clean Water Services Advisory Commission, a former Chair of the Washington County Fair Board and a past Chair of the Groner School Board, now part of the Hillsboro School District.
Rich and Paula have been blessed with a uniquely large family. In addition to six biological children, Rich and Paula have welcomed dozens of children of all ages into their home, including seven children that joined their family permanently as refugees from Vietnam. His children are now grown, have children of their own, and Rich is proud to have 42 grandchildren, who call him "Grandpa."
When Rich is not practicing law or spending time with his family, he is an avid birder. He has been fortunate to travel the world photographing birds and he enjoys spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors.
As your State Representative, Rich is committed to finding efficiencies within state government and increasing transparency at every level. He is also committed to civility in politics and has made it a goal of his time in public office to focus on solving problems, not simply winning political battles. He will always listen, keep an open door, and strive to act with integrity at all times.
