State Representative Lamar Wise began his career in advocacy with the Oregon Student Association (OSA), first serving as Legislative Director in 2015 and later as Executive Director in 2017. During his time at OSA, he championed efforts to curb tuition increases, expand mental health services on college campuses, and empower students to participate fully in the electoral process.
In 2019, Lamar transitioned to Oregon AFSCME as a Political Coordinator, where he has focused on advancing economic justice for working families across the state. His leadership and dedication have led to appointments on several key boards, including the ACLU of Oregon, Community Alliance of Tenants Action Fund, Our Oregon, the Safety and Justice PAC Board, and the Governor’s Racial Justice Council.
Across every role, Lamar has fought to ensure that Portlanders and Oregonians, especially those most impacted by policy decisions, have a meaningful voice in the governmental processes that shape their lives.
Values
Lamar’s work is grounded in a clear set of values that reflect his lived experiences, his professional mission, and the communities he serves.
Supporting Working Families
At his core, Lamar is committed to improving the lives of working families and uplifting marginalized communities. He believes systems must actively work for the people they claim to serve.
Economic Stability for All
With deep experience in labor advocacy, Lamar is focused not only on workers’ rights but also on strengthening the economic stability of individuals and families who are facing hardship.
Expanding Opportunity
Lamar values opportunity as a pathway to long-term stability. He views education as a critical tool for improving socioeconomic status, especially as job markets shift and new challenges emerge.
Investing in Childcare
Lamar is a strong advocate for addressing Oregon’s childcare crisis. The state leaves an estimated $1.4 billion in revenue on the table each year due to inadequate childcare access, an issue he believes must be urgently addressed to support families and strengthen the economy.
Why I Serve
“I serve because I believe in building systems that uplift working families and create real opportunities for those who have been left behind. My commitment is to ensure every Oregonian has the chance to thrive, and a voice in the decisions that shape their future.”
