Student engagement has always been one of my priorities. I spent 8 years on the board of the Hillsboro School District, my first elected position, and have been involved with preschool and PTAs for many years. There are many opportunities for students of all ages to get involved in our political process!
One great opportunity is the Oregon's Kid Governor, an opportunity for 5th graders to learn about the Oregon government, concluding with the election of the Oregon Kid Governor.
The Secretary of State puts on an annual essay contest for elementary and middle school students. It is a fantastic way to get young students thinking about civic engagement.
For high school students the YMCA Youth and Government program offers a unique, hands on approach to learning how the legislative process works in Oregon.
The Classroom Law Project offers a variety of programs to promote civic engagement.
I host community listening sessions regularly and students are highly encouraged to attend and share their ideas.
